When selecting a lawyer to handle your divorce case, consider
their background, reputation, negotiating skills and fees. The more
experience your lawyer has handling divorce cases, the better able
they are to handle the issues in your case. Using your business
attorney to handle your divorce case can be disastrous.

An attorney’s credibility with judges and other lawyers is also
important. After all, they are going to be speaking for you in court
and negotiating for you with your spouse’s lawyer. They must
therefore be credible to be successful for you.

Finally, you must be comfortable with your attorney’s style. Some
people going through a divorce want an aggressive attorney to pursue
every possible avenue to ensure that they get the most possible from
their divorce settlement. Others want the process to run smoothly
without making waves so as to decrease animosity and potential
attorney fees. Only you know what’s important to you. Make sure to
discuss your preferences with the attorney during your initial meeting.
