Am I entitled to alimony?
Alimony, sometimes referred to as spousal support or
maintenance,
is generally awarded based on a variety of factors, including but not
limited to the length of the marriage, the age of the parties, the
education level of the parties, the ability of each party to work, and
whether or not one party was at fault for the breakdown of the
marriage. Some states have guidelines or formulas that are used in
determining whether alimony should be awarded, and if so, in what
amount. These guidelines are not always binding on the judge,
though, so a skilled attorney must argue that the relevant factors
favor their client. The law in this area varies greatly from state to
state,
so make sure to talk with your lawyer if you think you need or are
entitled to alimony.
